Can I Have Your Attention Please?

In today’s world, there are a million things vying for your attention. WorkFamilyFriendsSocial mediaEmailsNetflixHousehold chores...It’s a never-ending list of to-dos. So how do you choose WHAT to give your attention to?You establish your non-negotiables.

What Are Non-Negotiables?

In short, your non-negotiables are the things that matter most to you. The things that align with your core values. When you accomplish a non-negotiable, you feel like you've done something meaningful. With so many things to get distracted by, it's easy to feel like the day flew by. Maybe you feel as though you accomplished nothing. There's just not enough time in the day to do it all! The secret is, you're not supposed to do it all. Focus on your non-negotiables FIRST.

Reclaim Your Day

Yesterday, we discussed how the path to what you want, is on the other side of what seems to be in the way. The fact that there is so much demand for our attention, is the exact reason we need to reclaim our focus. We need to hone in on what truly is most important to us and make sure we do those things each day. This will have us moving forward in a positive direction. For me, my non-negotiables are:Making sure I workout.Do at least 1 thing productive for the gym.Spend quality time with my girlfriend and my dog Dallas. And drink quality coffee (okay, not really the last one but I do feel strongly about my coffee)If I am able to do these things I am able to feel like my day was a success! With the quarantine effectively hitting pause on my world, I was able to take some time to de-clutter my brain and figure out these non-negotiables for myself.

What Are YOUR Non-Negotiables?

Your task today is to take 5 minutes right now to write down as many non-negotiables as you can think of. Ask yourself, "What is most important to me?" Not what takes up most of your time, but what truly is most important to you. What will help you end each day with a feeling of accomplishment? Be as specific as you can.Maybe it’s important for you to take care of yourself and finally focus on YOUR health, but all the crazy busy-ness of your life gets in the way.Maybe you’ve been wanting to change careers but haven’t been able to find time to focus on what you’re truly passionate about! Making non-negotiables isn’t about dropping everything else and simply focusing on those, it’s about carving out just a little bit of time, each week or each day to make sure you work on those things.
